The Key to Real Freedom in Business (And The 4 Mindset Shifts to Have)
It may be fun to play Wonder Woman and try to do everything in your business by yourself. But if you want to achieve real freedom, you have to start building your team.
A few years back, Lisa was looking for a way out of law firms.
She had been hopping from one law firm to the next for over a decade and was tired of having “old, white-haired, entitled males” as her bosses. Lisa also didn’t like the fact that she couldn’t take time off when she wanted—or needed—it. More importantly, she was sick of working 24/7 at the beck and call of said bosses, without much to show for it.
Lisa was determined to get her life back.
So, it was in early 2020 that she finally opened her own boutique law firm in Denver, Colorado. She thought that being her own boss would mean she could replace the revenue she used to get from the law firm—while having full control of her schedule.
But things didn’t exactly go as she planned.
See, Lisa was brought up in a family of highly-educated individuals whose mantra was “Work hard.”
Her parents taught her that the key to getting anything she wants was to work really hard for it. This meant Lisa found it hard to let go of control and have other people help her, much less work for her.
There she was, on the brink of achieving real freedom by having her own law firm…
…Except she couldn’t really step away from the business even just to take a holiday.
It’s all because she insisted on being a one-woman team who did everything herself. From receiving clients at her law firm, answering calls, doing research, filing legal paperwork, doing her books—you name it, she did it.
That only stopped when Lisa realized she was defeating the very purpose of her decision to venture out on her own:
To achieve true freedom.
Slowly, she trained herself to let go of the need to control everything. And she started by hiring a paralegal. Immediately, she felt a sense of relief about not having to do all the work herself. Now, she’s also looking to hire a bookkeeper.
Finally, Lisa’s starting to feel like a real business owner.
She’s now an entrepreneur who has control over her own time. As she was no longer doing everything by herself, she can now afford to slow down and take a break when she needed or wanted it.
The good news is, you can do the same.
4 Mindset Shifts You Need to Achieve Real Freedom in Business
Many of us business owners had an upbringing that’s similar to Lisa’s. That is, we think we have to do it all to have it all.
But as Lisa’s story showed us, this kind of mindset doesn’t result in true freedom and independence in business. As such, there’s a need for many of us to take huge mindset shifts before we can start leveraging the talents of other people in our businesses.
To help you out with that, here are four things you need to realize about flying solo versus building a team that can help you:
Mindset Shift #1 - Some People are Better in Certain Aspects of Your Business Than You Are
One of Lisa’s biggest realizations after hiring her first paralegal was that there are some people who are better than she is – at least in certain aspects of the business.
Sure, she was the legal expert in her law firm. But her paralegal was so much better at things like keeping their archives in order and pulling up clients’ files. And Lisa didn’t like doing those things, too!
Now, regardless of the nature and scope of your business, it’s guaranteed that there are certain tasks in it that someone else can do better than you.
That’s why you have to start growing a team. Only then can you spend your time on areas of your business that you truly like and tasks that you are truly good at. For the rest, you must simply leverage the strengths of other people.
Mindset Shift #2 - Freeing Up More Time For Yourself Can Help You Grow the Business
Naturally, you cannot achieve real independence over your time and schedule if you’re a one-woman team.
But that’s not all.
If your efforts are constantly activated with the day-to-day operations of your business, you’ll also find it hard to strategize ways on how to grow it. As a result, you can get stuck in one place for a longer period of time… thus delaying the achievement of your goals.
Mindset Shift #3 - Martyrdom Does Not Breed Good Creative Energy
Martyrdom doesn’t only take up a huge chunk of your time. It also takes up too much good creative energy.
Think about it this way:
Ever got home at the end of a business day and just felt tired, drained, and too spent to do anything else? And then, you wake up in the morning without feeling rested at all? So, you drag your feet through yet another work day where you can barely function 100%.
This is one of the dangers of not having a team to support you.
The solo setup can become quite dysfunctional fast, and you might succumb to burnout and a prolonged loss of creativity due to too much fatigue.
Mindset Shift #4 - Hiring Help Does Not Make You Less Brilliant
This might be a tough pill to swallow, but for many business owners, the ability to do everything alone has become a badge of honor. So, we think that hiring help makes us less impressive.
But you have to shift that mindset and realize that in your own business, there is no one to impress.
YOU are the boss.
So really, the only person who has to be impressed by your achievements… is YOU.
If hiring help is what would accelerate the growth of your business and the realization of your dreams, then you should go for it.
Start Building Your Team Today
You’ve heard this one before: teamwork makes the dream work. Cliché as it may sound, there’s a lot of wisdom in that old saying.
Yes, there’s no doubt that you can still achieve great things while working on your own. But let me ask you:
How long are you willing to wait until you can enjoy true freedom in life? Wouldn’t you rather start reaping the rewards of your hard work sooner than later?
If so, my advice is that you start looking for people who can help you get there faster. Start building your team today and watch your business grow exponentially—a lot faster.
