I'm sure you've already heard the importance of focusing on income generating activities in your business. What does small business marketing offline look like? And what about online?
The reality is that there's a lot of confusion on what the income generating activities actually are and how you should dedicate time to them. What should you be doing?
It's often a question I get a lot: "What should I be doing each week to grow my business? Where should I be going? How much time should be allocated?"
I will try and break this down for you and make this super practical. You will see where you could be focusing more on income generating activities.
Small Business Marketing Offline
The first area that we're going to look at is all about offline income generating activities.
These are things that you believe will lead to you getting paying clients. That's really what this is about. I also believe that we need to have a system. It's not a 'hope and pray' method. We're going to be engaging in certain activities that increase the chances of you getting a paying client at the end.
What Are the Offline Income Generating Activities?
In the offline world, those are going to be:
- networking
- meeting with people 1-on-1
- getting in front of some of those ideal prospects - perhaps through hosting a workshop or co-hosting a workshop with a strategic alliance partner
- guest speaking at events or organizations
I used networking to get my brand new business off the ground here in the states. Within the first six months, I generated six figures in income through direct, 1-to-1 meetings and by attending local networking groups. It really works!
A lot of my time was dedicated to offline activities until my business started to grow.
A Caveat to Marketing Offline
You do need to have a system.
What are those activities that you believe will most likely lead to paying clients for you?
Is it:
- Hosting a workshop?
- Getting a local speaking gig?
- Giving a free talk?
- 1-to-1 networking?
What is your core skill set?
What is the easiest way for you to generate new clients?
We don't want to be doing this in a complicated way. Not at first. Otherwise, you'll spend way too much time and energy trying to build a skill set in something that's probably not the most natural thing for you.
What's your natural skill set?
A System for Small Business Marketing Offline
Secondly, you definitely need to think about the system.
If you're meeting with people, you need to be meeting with them to either:
- Educate them
- Find out more about the challenges that they're facing in the area that you can help them
- Make an offer to them to either chat further or to benefit from one of your services
Those strategies are always leading to you finding out more about those prospects, and ultimately leading to you making an offer to work with you, if that's appropriate.
In the next video, I will be sharing some strategies around how you should be spending your time online to grow your business.
