Why Should Every Business Hire a Business Coach or Mentor

Is it important to hire a business coach or mentor to help you achieve your vision and your goals for your business?

I am all about coaching and mentoring. Well, the truth is, of course, I'm a coach. It may sound self-serving. But if we start to look outside the business coaching industry, for example, Olympiads or top professionals in the sports realm, they all have coaches. I'm a huge tennis fan myself, and everyone who is at the peak of their career has coaches and mentors to guide them. People that have been on the path that they want to be on. People that can assess their blind spots, that can give them honest feedback. Their trusted advisors. To help them get where they want to go faster and easier.

Why Would You Hire a Business Coach or Mentor?

For the same reasons.

There's an awful lot of things that you may not know. I'm always sharing this with my own clients, and the same is true for me. I'm always working with coaches and mentors. They're considerably further ahead on the path. They give me the shortcuts, they share their industry expertise.

I use their help to lay out some of the things around my next area of growth. To guide me where to be careful. It's almost like they can illuminate the path for me before I get there. So that when those things come up, I feel like I'm on familiar territory. I'm not completely freaking out by things I didn't know.

And exactly the same is true for you.

There's a level of business that you haven't been at previously. And working with a business coach or mentor that's had a ton of expertise, seen a lot of the mistakes, experienced the pitfalls, that can illuminate that path for you as well. It's going to make your journey easier and quicker.

How Do You Choose the Right Business Coach or Mentor?

That's one of the questions that always comes up.

I think you have to resonate with what they stand for. Honestly, you've got to have some shared values. If they're teaching an approach that feels very contradictory to your own approach and your own values and beliefs, it's probably not going to work.

They must have a proven track record. You want to ask them about their success stories. Are they willing to introduce you to some of their clients that they've worked with? So that you can ask them what the experience was like of working with that business coach or mentor? Get some of those references, and speak with people.

A Great Business Coach or Mentor

Are they going to stretch you? Are you going to feel slightly uncomfortable?

They should absolutely have your best interest at heart, and your growth too, but they should stretch you. You don't want to become too friendly and comfortable with your business coach or mentor, because they need to stand outside your business, and be objective.

It's typically a good thing if you feel like you're hiring a business coach or mentor that's going to cause you to feel slightly uncomfortable. To push the boundaries on your own comfort zone and ask you to step into your full potential, and help you get there.
