Forget New Year’s Resolutions: try this instead for an extraordinary 2015

If you want 2015 to be different this year, you’ll need a different approach.

The majority of people who set resolutions never achieve them. In fact, most of their resolutions will be forgotten before January comes to a close.

There are many reasons why this happens but one stands out. Most people don’t like the discomfort associated with change – even when it leads to positive changes such as improved health, more love and friendship, financial freedom or a better lifestyle.

Dealing with your own discomfort is tough enough but what can be trickier is dealing with the discomfort of others who want to hold you back as you start to grow.You’re not alone on this one! Back in 1931, Jack Lang, a politician in Australia, used the term “tall poppy” to describe those on government salaries above £10 per week (a handsome sum of money in those days!) and argued that they need to be chopped down.

The term “Tall Poppy Syndrome” has since evolved to describe how people who have achieved a visible level of success are resented, attacked, cut down or criticized because their talents or achievements raise them above or distinguish them from colleagues or peers. Metaphorically, it means that as the tallest poppies grow above the rest in the field, they need to be cut down so that they match the size of those around them. Ouch!!!

So you have 2 choices:

  1. Remain the same as everybody else around you (you wouldn’t be reading this if that’s what you truly wanted);
  2. Dare to be different and stand out from the crowd (not always the easiest option but far more rewarding longer term)!

Surrounding yourself with taller poppies that want to celebrate your successes (instead of trying to chop your head off) is the easiest way to make your own resolutions stick in 2015. Those taller poppies will inspire you, encourage you and want to see you grow tall and flourish. Surround yourself with tall poppies and set yourself up for extraordinary success in 2015.

As 2014 comes to an end I want to share with you a line from one of my favourite Marianne Williamson quotes:

“Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do… And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.”
